Bio
A local recruit bearing one of the most famous surnames in the western suburbs, Bob Spurling's brief VFL career was overshadowed by his significant later achievements in amateur football. He debuted for Footscray in 1963 as a versatile 184cm utility capable of playing key position or flank roles, but found himself on the fringe of selection during the Ted Whitten era, managing just two senior appearances in his first season. After failing to break into the senior side at all during 1964, he returned for a final block of four games in 1965 before departing the club. While his time at the top level was fleeting, Spurling went on to forge a distinguished legacy in the VAFA, becoming a transformative captain-coach for North Old Boys and representing the "Big V" in amateur representative football.
