Bio
Recruited from Somerville on the Mornington Peninsula, Bob Stone created history as the youngest player to ever debut for Melbourne when he played his first game aged just 17 years and 25 days. A tall defender with significant potential, his initial VFL stint was almost immediately interrupted by the Second World War, with Stone enlisting in the Royal Australian Navy as soon as he turned 18. After serving on several ships, he returned to the Demons in 1949, but the logistical burden of travelling from the country to the city for training proved unsustainable. Stone ultimately returned to his local club Hastings, where he became a bona fide regional legend, winning the Mornington Peninsula League’s best and fairest award three times rather than pursuing a long-term VFL career.
