Bio
Recruited from Broadford as a mature-age prospect, Bob Suter arrived at Essendon in 1956 already in his late twenties, reportedly fudging his age to secure a chance at VFL level. A nuggety back pocket who made up for lost time with tenacious defensive work, he quickly cemented a spot in the senior side, playing all but one game in 1957 and featuring in the Bombers' Grand Final loss to Melbourne—where he was immortalised in a famous photograph tackling Ron Barassi. He was recognised that season with the club's Most Unselfish Player award, highlighting his team-first approach in defence. Suter's career came to a sudden and unique conclusion after the 1958 season when, hampered by injury and having just struck division one in the Tattersalls lottery, he retired from league football to play in the country with Kyneton.
