Bio
Bob Trainer was a key position prospect recruited to the Lake Oval from VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne. Standing at 183cm, a solid height for a key forward or defender in the era, he was given his opportunity with South Melbourne midway through the 1950 season. Trainer made his debut in Round 13 against Fitzroy and was immediately effective in attack, showing an ability to hit the scoreboard during his short stint at the elite level. Although his VFL career was confined to just three senior appearances in a single month of football, he managed to boot three goals—maintaining a tidy average of a goal a game—before departing the VFL scene.
