Recruited from West Perth, Brad Gwilliam was a wiry key defender who entered the AFL via West Coast's final selection in the 1989 National Draft—a late-pick bracket that famously also secured club legend Dean Kemp. Gwilliam managed four senior appearances for the Eagles in 1990, debuting in Round 1 against Collingwood, but he found himself squeezed out of a rapidly developing West Coast backline and was eventually delisted. Handed an AFL lifeline by Richmond in the 1992 Pre-Season Draft, he immediately slotted into the Tigers' defence as a full-back and appeared set for a regular role at his second club. His career was cruelly cut short just four games into his time at Punt Road when he suffered a horrific knee injury after colliding with a goalpost against Adelaide at Football Park, a freak accident that forced his premature retirement from the top level.
