Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with pick 11 in the 1993 National Draft, Brad Johnson arrived at the Western Bulldogs as a talented local junior from Hoppers Crossing. He wasted little time establishing himself at the senior level, debuting in 1994 and becoming a fixture in the side for the next 17 seasons. In an era where player movement became increasingly common, Johnson remained a loyal one-club player, serving as a constant presence through the club's transition from Footscray to the Western Bulldogs and various rebuilding phases.
On the field, Johnson was defined by his elite endurance and versatility. He began his career as a prolific ball-winning midfielder before transitioning into a dangerous medium-sized forward later in his tenure. Despite standing only 182cm, his exceptional overhead marking ability allowed him to play much taller than his stature, often outmuscling larger defenders in one-on-one contests. This dual threat, combined with his famous on-field grin, earned him the nickname "The Smiling Assassin." His consistency was highlighted by his ability to top the club's goalkicking five times and earn six All-Australian blazers, including being named captain of the 2006 representative side.
