Bio
Recruited from West Preston, Brendon Hackwill is best remembered as a rare dual-sport athlete who transitioned to VFL football immediately after representing Australia in basketball at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Standing 193cm, he arrived at Fitzroy for the 1965 season, utilising his height and basketball-honed handling skills to compete as a ruckman and key position utility. His brief two-season stint coincided with a bleak on-field period for the Lions, and he experienced just one victory in his 17 senior appearances before departing the VFL scene. Despite his short tenure, Hackwill remains a unique figure in Fitzroy history as an Olympian who swapped the international court for the mud of Brunswick Street Oval.
