Selected by Geelong with pick 4 in the 2002 National Draft, Brent Moloney established himself as a ferocious contested ball-winner with a booming right boot. Despite his high draft pedigree, he found a regular spot in the centre square difficult to secure within a Cats engine room that was rapidly assembling future premiership stars. Consequently, after just two seasons, Moloney became the centrepiece of a high-profile trade, sent to Melbourne to facilitate the deal that delivered Brad Ottens to Kardinia Park.

At Melbourne, Moloney developed into a premier clearance specialist, renowned for his physical aggression at stoppages and ability to launch long-range goals. His individual career peaked in 2011 when he polled 19 Brownlow votes and won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal as the Demons' best and fairest. However, his tenure at the club ended under strained circumstances following a fallout with incoming coach Mark Neeld regarding the team's leadership culture. In late 2012, Moloney made history as the AFL's first-ever restricted free agent to change clubs, moving to the Brisbane Lions. He provided immediate inside strength for the Lions but was eventually forced into retirement in 2014 due to persistent Achilles issues.
