Teams

Recruited from Broken Hill via the NSW/ACT Rams program with pick 37 in the 2002 National Draft, Brent Staker developed into a versatile swingman capable of filling key posts at both ends of the ground. Possessing the height and endurance to play as a lead-up forward or an intercepting defender, he became a regular fixture in a formidable West Coast lineup, though he famously missed out on the 2006 premiership side after being named as an emergency. While his time in Perth is often historically footnoted by a high-profile on-field incident involving Barry Hall in 2008, Staker was a legitimate structural asset for the Eagles, using his athleticism to play tall or small depending on the match-up.

Seeking a fresh start and greater on-field opportunities, Staker was traded to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2010 season. His tenure in Queensland began with promise, as he finished fourth in the club's best and fairest in his debut year, but his momentum was cruelly halted by severe durability issues. Staker endured two knee reconstructions that wiped out the entire 2012 season and significantly hampered his final years, limiting his ability to aid the Lions during a difficult rebuilding phase. He announced his retirement in 2015, finishing his career as a respected but luckless utility who managed 160 games despite significant injury setbacks.
