Bio
Recruited from St Peters, Bret Bailey was a versatile utility who rose through the grades at Melbourne to become a key fixture during the club's late-1980s resurgence. While often tasked with defensive stopping roles or used as a rotation player, he enjoyed a standout campaign in 1987, playing every game for the season and etching his name into Demon folklore by snapping the winning goal in the Panasonic Cup Grand Final against Essendon. Bailey provided grunt and flexibility to a Melbourne side breaking a long finals drought, but he eventually fell out of favour and was delisted at the end of 1989. Handed a lifeline by Geelong in the 1990 pre-season draft, he managed just one senior appearance for the Cats before crossing to Sandringham, where he cemented a successful post-AFL career as a dual VFA premiership player.
