Bio
Recruited as the son of former Blue Gary Backwell, Brett Backwell was selected by Carlton with pick 67 in the 1998 National Draft. A diminutive but tenacious rover and small forward, he relied on a high work rate and tackling pressure to impact contests at the senior level. Despite breaking into the side during the club's successful 1999 campaign, Backwell found it difficult to secure a permanent spot in a midfield rotation boasting stars like Brett Ratten and Scott Camporeale. He made 18 appearances over three seasons before being delisted at the end of 2001, though he later carved out a significant legacy in the SANFL with Glenelg, where he famously chose to have his injured left ring finger amputated to extend his playing career.
