Bio
Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens with pick 16 in the 1998 National Draft, Brett Burton established himself as one of the most athletically gifted forwards of his generation. Dubbed the "Birdman" for his spectacular vertical leap and penchant for taking high-flying marks, he was a difficult matchup for opposition defenders, possessing the height to play as a key target and the aerobic capacity to run opponents into the ground up the field. He topped Adelaide's goalkicking in 2002 and again in 2008, and finally secured the Mark of the Year title in 2009 after a career spent providing highlights, including a famous screamer against Carlton at Marvel Stadium.
Despite his natural talent, Burton's career was frequently interrupted by injuries, including soft tissue setbacks and a major knee reconstruction in 2008 that curtailed a season where he was in career-best form. He retired in 2010 as a respected one-club player who served as a key attacking pillar during the Neil Craig era. Renowned for his meticulous preparation and elite fitness standards, Burton transitioned immediately into off-field roles, leveraging his sports science background to serve as a high-performance manager and football administrator at both the Brisbane Lions and Adelaide.
