Bio
A highly touted junior from the Port Adelaide Magpies, Brett Chalmers is historically significant for the draft tampering scandal that precipitated his AFL debut. After refusing to join Richmond as a teenager in 1989, he was drafted by Collingwood in 1992 but was subsequently fined and banned from playing for the Victorian powerhouse for three years after it was revealed he had written to other clubs warning them he would remain in the SANFL if selected. Consequently traded to the Adelaide Crows, he carved out a role as a physical ruckman and key forward, using his imposing 195cm frame and booming kick to support the side's tall stocks over four seasons. He eventually secured a move to his "natural" home, Port Adelaide, for the 1998 season, but injuries and form saw him retire from the top level at just 26. While he missed out on AFL premiership success, Chalmers remains a SANFL legend with four flags for the Magpies and is known to modern sports fans as the father of Olympic swimming champion Kyle Chalmers.
