Family

Recruited from SANFL powerhouse Norwood, Brett James initially broke into the AFL with Collingwood, where he spent three seasons establishing himself as a reliable contributor at Victoria Park. However, the pull of his home state eventually saw him request a trade back to South Australia at the end of 1996, landing at Adelaide just as the club was entering its most successful era under Malcolm Blight. This move proved to be a masterstroke, as James immediately cemented his spot in a side destined for history.

A disciplined and versatile utility, James was often tasked with defensive roles through the midfield or across half-back, valued for his ability to negate opposition playmakers while gathering possessions of his own. His career highlight came quickly at his second club, playing an integral role in the Crows' back-to-back premiership triumphs in 1997 and 1998. Although his AFL tenure ended following the 2000 season, his contribution to Adelaide's golden era remains his defining legacy, after which he returned to Norwood to continue the James family's strong connection with the Redlegs.
