Bio
Originally overlooked by recruiters, Brett Montgomery fought his way onto an AFL list via the VFL's Springvale Scorpions, debuting for the Western Bulldogs as a 23-year-old mature-age recruit. While he showed early promise as a high-leaping forward capable of spectacular grabs, his career truly ignited after a strategic trade to Port Adelaide in late 1999—a move involving Nathan Eagleton that is often cited as a benchmark for "win-win" deals. At Alberton, Montgomery transformed into a courageous and astute defender, winning the John Cahill Medal as the club's best and fairest in his first season and earning All-Australian honours in 2002.
Renowned for his deceptive overhead marking strength and football smarts, Montgomery became a key pillar in Port Adelaide's historic 2004 premiership team. His ability to play tall in defence or pinch-hit forward made him an invaluable utility during the Power's era of dominance. He was delisted by Port Adelaide following the 2005 season as the club looked to regenerate its list, allowing him to return to the Western Bulldogs for a final two-year stint. He retired in 2007 with a reputation as one of the league's most professional and tactically intelligent players.
