Bio
Recruited as a mature-age prospect from Croydon, Brett Stephens did not make his VFL debut until the age of 26, instantly adding a layer of physical maturity and professionalism to the Fitzroy lineup in 1987. A tight-checking defender often tasked with neutralizing dangerous opposition small forwards, Stephens relied on superior aerobic capacity and concentration rather than flashy ball use. He became a fixture of the Lions' backline during a financially turbulent era for the club, displaying remarkable durability to miss very few matches over his seven-season tenure. Stephens retired in 1993 having squeezed every ounce of potential out of his late start, eventually transitioning into a successful career as a high-performance fitness coach and psychologist.
