Bio
Recruited from the Otway Rovers in Fitzroy’s fertile Western District zone, Brian Brown was a rugged back pocket and utility who showed significant promise before injury intervened. After graduating from St Patrick’s College in Ballarat, he became a reliable contributor for the Lions, playing a key role in the club's 1978 Night Series Premiership victory. However, his career was derailed by severe setbacks, including two broken legs in consecutive years that forced him to miss the entire 1980 season. Brown showed immense resilience to return in 1981 and scrape past the 50-game milestone—a critical achievement that would famously allow the Brisbane Lions to recruit his son, club legend Jonathan Brown, under the father-son rule decades later. He concluded his VFL playing days with a brief two-game stint at Kevin Sheedy's Essendon in 1982 before returning to the country leagues to captain-coach Colac.
