Recruited from local club Balwyn, Brian Douge was a tenacious back pocket who had to fight hard to crack Hawthorn's powerful lineup during the early 1970s. After missing out on the 1971 premiership side, he solidified his place in the seniors by 1973, earning a reputation as a disciplined defender capable of shutting down dangerous rovers. His VFL career ended on the ultimate high note during the 1976 Grand Final victory over North Melbourne, where he was named among the Hawks' best players in his final appearance for the club. Immediately following the premiership win, he moved to Western Australia to serve as captain-coach of Subiaco.
