Bio
A unique figure in Hawthorn history, Brian Kann holds the distinction of progressing through every level of the club's structure, from the under-15s and colts right through to the senior side. A strongly built defender who was never afraid to use his vigour to intimidate opponents, he became a key fixture in the club's backline during the mid-1950s. Kann played a significant role in the Hawks' breakthrough 1957 campaign, featuring in the club's first-ever VFL finals series, before later captaining the reserves to back-to-back premierships in 1958 and 1959. He departed the VFL to captain-coach Moorabbin in the VFA, but his service to the Hawks extended well beyond his playing days. As a long-serving board member and Hall of Fame inductee, Kann was instrumental in the "Operation Payback" campaign that helped save the club from a proposed merger in the 1990s.
