Recruited from City-South in Tasmania, Brian Lowe was a mobile ruckman who arrived at Kardinia Park during the Cats' resurgence under Bob Davis. Standing 189cm, he quickly established himself in the senior side, featuring in the club's 1961 Night Series premiership and playing in the drawn 1962 Preliminary Final. However, Lowe's time in the VFL is defined by a notorious hard-luck story from the 1963 finals campaign. After rucking in the Semi Final victory over Hawthorn that booked Geelong's place in the Grand Final, he was controversially omitted from the decider to accommodate the return of star playmaker Alistair Lord. Lowe missed out on the senior flag but responded with immense character, dominating the Reserves Grand Final that same year to be voted Best on Ground in a premiership victory. He subsequently returned to Tasmania, where he forged a successful career as a captain-coach across multiple leagues.
