Bio
Brian McCarthy was a talented recruit from Yarrawonga who established himself as a midfield regular for St Kilda during a transformative era for the club. Playing primarily in the centre or on the wing, he was a consistent performer throughout the late 1950s as coach Alan Killigrew worked to instill a harder edge into a struggling side. McCarthy’s career coincided with the Saints' gradual rise from the bottom of the ladder, culminating in the 1961 season where the club broke a 22-year finals drought. Fittingly, his 74th and final senior appearance came in the historic 1961 First Semi-Final against Footscray, seeing him depart the VFL stage just as St Kilda returned to major round action.
