Bio
Recruited from East Sandringham, Brian Sampson was a towering ruckman whose aerial strength and versatility allowed him to impact contests all over the ground. Standing 192cm, he was a natural ball-winner who often pushed forward to become a dangerous marking target or drifted back to support the defence. His early years at Windy Hill were plagued by persistent knee and back injuries—which cruelly ruled him out of the 1959 Grand Final—but he persevered to earn his first premiership medallion as the 19th man in Essendon's 1962 triumph.
Sampson’s crowning achievement came in the 1965 season, where he finally enjoyed an injury-free run to play every game and win the club's Best Team Player award. He was a standout performer in that year's Grand Final victory over St Kilda, dominating the ruck contests and drifting forward to boot two vital goals. After reaching exactly 100 games for the Bombers, he crossed the Nullarbor to join West Perth, where he continued his success by winning a WAFL premiership in 1969.
