Bio
Recruited from Wentworth in the Sunraysia league, Brian Winton arrived at Richmond as a potent forward prospect, notably booting a century of goals to top the VFL Under-19s goalkicking in 1982. Despite winning the Tigers' Best First Year Player award in 1983, he crossed to Essendon the following season, where he initially served as depth for the injury-hit Paul Salmon. Unable to cement a spot in the Bombers' back-to-back premiership sides of 1984 and 1985, Winton eventually reinvented himself as a robust, running full-back, enjoying his best campaign in 1987 where his pace out of defence became a key asset. He was thrown a lifeline by St Kilda with the first pick in the 1989 Pre-Season Draft, and although he bagged three goals on debut for the Saints, he added just four more games to his tally before his VFL career concluded.
