Bio
Recruited from VFA club Springvale, Brian Woodman had a tenacious path to VFL football that was initially delayed by national service. A determined teenager who initially invited himself to South Melbourne training after being overlooked by recruiters, he was eventually spotted by reserves coach Brian Leahy but lost two prime development years to conscription in the army. He finally made his senior debut in 1972, establishing himself as a fixture in the Swans’ lineup.
While he began his tenure on the wing, Woodman found his true calling as a reliable back pocket under coach Graeme John. He became known as a consistent and loyal defender who rarely lowered his colours, playing over 100 games for the club. His career ended on a unique note in 1978; having already decided to retire to focus on his sales career and captain-coach the reserves, he was called up for one final senior appearance in Round 1 to shield rookie Bernie Evans from a premature debut, playing just the first half before swapping places.
