Bio
Recruited from the Bendigo region, Bruce Carruthers was a skilled half-forward and rover known for his ability to kick proficiently with both feet. His journey to League football was turbulent; after captain-coaching Rochester and winning a premiership with South Bendigo, his initial attempt to join Essendon in 1926 was blocked when he admitted to accepting payments from Richmond years prior, restricting him to the reserves. He finally broke into the senior side in the opening round of 1927, making an immediate impact with a four-goal haul against Footscray. Despite this promising start, a shoulder injury derailed his season, and pressing business commitments restricted him to a single appearance in 1928 before he moved to Tasmania to captain-coach Launceston.
