Recruited from South Fremantle in the WAFL, Bruce Monteath arrived at Punt Road in 1975 and immediately established himself as a classy, goal-kicking rover and half-forward. Despite not being a traditional key position player, he possessed excellent marking strength and a dangerous snap around goals, attributes that saw him top Richmond’s goalkicking in 1978 with 55 majors. His consistency and leadership were rewarded with All-Australian selection in 1979 and the club captaincy in 1980, taking over from club legend Kevin Bartlett.

Monteath’s place in football folklore is defined by the unique circumstances of the 1980 Grand Final. Although he captained the Tigers to a record-breaking premiership victory over Collingwood, he spent almost the entire match on the interchange bench due to a debilitating injury, only entering the field in the dying moments to officially participate in the triumph. It proved to be his final game for Richmond; he returned to Western Australia the following season, leaving a legacy as a premiership captain who lifted the cup despite barely touching the ball on the decisive day.
