Teams

Born into a prominent sporting family as the son of Austral Wheel Race champion cyclist Louis Scharp, Bruce Scharp was a solidly built utility who arrived at Carlton via the Kew Amateurs. He made his VFL debut at the relatively mature age of 25 in 1930, booting a goal in his first match against St Kilda, but struggled to cement a regular spot in the Blues' lineup over two seasons. Scharp's career is best remembered for his chaotic 1933 campaign, where he became one of the league's true journeymen; he started the year with a single game for Hawthorn before being cleared mid-season to Fitzroy, where he managed just two more appearances. Standing 175cm and weighing a robust 87kg, he was a heavy-set follower and defender who eventually departed the VFL to continue his football journey with Sandringham in the VFA and Yarrawonga in the Ovens & Murray league.
