Recruited from Swinburne Tech, Bruce Stevenson was a strong-bodied tall utility who became a central figure in Hawthorn's 1971 premiership triumph. Standing 189cm, he often played as a second ruckman supporting Don Scott or filled key posts around the ground, renowned for his physical resilience and ability to absorb contact. His career is defined by a legendary moment in the 1971 Grand Final against St Kilda, where he famously collided with the Saints' fearsome enforcer Carl Ditterich; to the roar of the crowd, Stevenson stayed upright while "Big Carl" hit the turf. While his VFL career concluded somewhat prematurely after he moved to South Australia to play for Central District and West Adelaide in the SANFL, Stevenson remained deeply connected to Hawthorn, eventually returning to serve as a long-term board member and earning life membership for his dual contribution on and off the field.
