Bio
A decorated Tasmanian champion, Burnie Payne arrived at St Kilda in 1964 as part of the club's successful recruiting raid on the Apple Isle that also netted legend Darrel Baldock. A speedy and slippery rover who could push forward with dangerous effect, Payne made an immediate impact at Moorabbin, booting three goals on debut against Essendon and a bag of six against South Melbourne. He finished second in the club's goalkicking that season with 27 majors, proving to be a natural ball-winner and finisher at the elite level. However, his VFL career was cut short when family reasons forced him to return to Hobart after just one season. Back in the TANFL, he cemented his status as a state league giant, winning back-to-back William Leitch Medals in 1965 and 1966 and eventually earning induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
