Bio
Recruited from the VAFA's University Blacks, Byron Guthrie arrived at the Western Oval as a tall utility prospect during a competitive era for the club. Standing at 182cm, he possessed the size to play key positions in the 1950s, but faced the difficult task of breaking into a strong Footscray lineup that reached the Preliminary Final in his debut season of 1956. Guthrie was largely used as a depth player, managing just four senior appearances across two seasons as he struggled to displace established stars in the Bulldogs' spine. Unable to cement a regular spot in the starting eighteen, his brief VFL career concluded at the end of the 1957 season.
