Recruited from West Adelaide with the 13th selection in the 2002 National Draft, Byron Schammer arrived at Fremantle with high expectations and made an immediate impact. He debuted in the opening round of 2003 and quickly earned a Rising Star nomination, impressing fans with his fearlessness and work rate. A tenacious left-footed midfielder, Schammer was known for his ability to win contested possession and his willingness to put his body on the line, traits that made him a regular fixture in the side during the Dockers' surge to the preliminary final in 2006.

As his career progressed, Schammer was often utilised in a run-with role, tasked with shutting down opposition playmakers through sheer aerobic endurance and defensive pressure. However, he battled inconsistency and criticism regarding his disposal efficiency, eventually finding himself on the fringe of the best 22 under coach Mark Harvey. Despite struggling to cement a permanent spot in the midfield rotation during his final few seasons, Schammer remained a committed one-club player and a cult figure among supporters, retiring at the end of 2011 after 129 games.
