Bio
Recruited by Port Adelaide with pick 27 in the 1999 National Draft, Cain Ackland was a journeyman ruckman whose career was often defined by the heavy scrutiny surrounding his recruitment rather than his on-field output. Initially unable to bypass established stars Matthew Primus and Brendon Lade at Port Adelaide, he was traded to St Kilda in 2005 to support Steven King, but struggled to cement a permanent spot in the Saints' lineup. His most controversial movement occurred when Carlton selected him with the first pick in the 2007 pre-season draft, a decision that drew significant criticism as the rebuilding Blues bypassed younger talent to secure his services on a lucrative contract. Despite being handed the primary ruck responsibilities during a difficult era for the club, Ackland struggled to impose himself physically on contests or justify the high expectations of his arrival, eventually being delisted at the end of the 2008 season.
