Bio
Recruited from East Fremantle with pick 54 in the 2007 National Draft, Cale Hooker evolved from a raw youngster into one of Essendon's most important key position players. While he initially established himself as an elite intercepting defender capable of locking down the competition's best forwards, earning All-Australian honours in 2014 and the Crichton Medal in 2015, his versatility became his defining trait. His career was interrupted by the club's supplements saga suspension in 2016, a period during which he famously rejected significant offers from Western Australian clubs to remain loyal to the Bombers.
Returning to the field in 2017, Hooker transitioned into a permanent forward role to address the team's structural deficits, booting 41 goals for the season and proving himself a clutch performer. Although he often swung back to defence when required, his final years were largely spent attacking the contest inside 50, where his contested marking strength remained a weapon. He retired in 2021 as a one-club player and Life Member, highly regarded for his ability to play crucial roles at both ends of the ground during a challenging period in the club's history.
