Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with pick 19 in the 2007 National Draft, Callan Ward arrived at the Western Bulldogs with a ready-made appetite for the contest. The grandson of former South Melbourne captain Bill Gunn, he quickly established himself as a courageous midfielder, playing a supporting role during the Bulldogs' preliminary final campaigns in 2009 and 2010. His career took a significant turn following the 2011 season when he became one of the first marquee uncontracted players to sign with the expansion Greater Western Sydney Giants. It was a bold decision to leave an established finals contender for a start-up franchise, but Ward embraced the challenge, being named the club's inaugural co-captain alongside Phil Davis.
Throughout the Giants' infancy, Ward was the competitive heartbeat of the side. A classic inside midfielder, he built a reputation as one of the league's toughest players, consistently putting his body on the line to win contested possession and clearances. He won the inaugural Kevin Sheedy Medal as the club's best and fairest in 2012 and remained an elite performer as the team transformed from easybeats to premiership contenders. His leadership was defined by his actions rather than words, often carrying the midfield load while the club's array of high draft picks developed around him.
