Recruited with pick 64 in the 1999 National Draft, Cameron Bruce proved to be one of the great bargains of his class, rapidly evolving into a smooth-moving utility for Melbourne. Renowned for his elite endurance and clean disposal, Bruce possessed the versatility to play as a goal-kicking midfielder, a rebounding defender, or a lead-up forward. He made an immediate impact during the Demons' run to the 2000 Grand Final and became a model of consistency over the next decade. His individual excellence was recognised in 2008 when he won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal, maintaining high standards even as the club struggled on the field.

Despite his long service and time in the leadership group, Bruce's tenure at Melbourne ended under clouded circumstances following the 2010 season. With the Demons prioritising youth during a rebuild, Bruce sought greater contract security, eventually crossing to Hawthorn in the Pre-Season Draft. While he added valuable experience to the Hawks' lineup, his final years were interrupted by fitness issues. He announced his retirement midway through 2012 due to a degenerative back condition, closing the book on a career defined by professionalism and versatility.
