Recruited from VFA powerhouse Preston, Cameron Doyle arrived at Victoria Park fresh off a premiership with the Bullants in 1984. He made an immediate impact for the Magpies, booting three goals on debut against North Melbourne and gathering 19 disposals in just his third game, appearing set for a long career as a goal-kicking wingman or flanker. However, his promising start was derailed during his fourth match against Essendon when he dislocated his shoulder, an injury that ended his debut season and forced him to miss the entire 1986 campaign. Doyle returned to manage just two more senior games in 1987 before being delisted, eventually returning to the VFA where he tasted premiership success again with Coburg in 1989.
