Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons as a promising junior forward, Cameron Ling transformed himself into the definitive run-with midfielder of his generation during a celebrated career at Kardinia Park. While he arrived with goal-kicking credentials, his lack of explosive pace prompted a shift to the midfield, where his elite aerobic capacity and disciplined concentration allowed him to blanket the competition's most damaging ball-winners. Far from being solely a negative player, Ling developed into a substantial possession winner in his own right, earning All-Australian selection and the 2004 Carji Greeves Medal as the club's best and fairest.
Ling's standing at Geelong extended well beyond his tactical value; he became a revered leader and a cult figure known affectionately as the Mayor of Geelong due to his local roots and distinctive red hair. He was a central pillar in the club's golden era, playing in the drought-breaking 2007 premiership and the 2009 victory before ascending to the captaincy in 2010. His career concluded on the ultimate high, as he skippered the Cats to the 2011 premiership and kicked the final goal of the match before announcing his immediate retirement, cementing his status as one of the club's most successful captains.
