Bio
Cashen "Cash" Fitzgerald was a dedicated Hawthorn clubman whose brief on-field career was eclipsed by a lifetime of service to the brown and gold. Born in 1921, Fitzgerald’s early footballing prime was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a Sergeant and contributed to the Guinea Gold newspaper for troops in the Pacific. He eventually made his VFL debut in the 1947 season, managing three senior games as a 26-year-old in a post-war Hawthorn side that was struggling to climb the ladder. While his time in the senior 18 was short-lived and yielded no goals, Fitzgerald’s connection to the club endured for decades. He became a fixture of the Hawthorn Past Players & Officials Association, serving as its Secretary and Treasurer for many years, where he played a vital role in maintaining the club's culture and history until his passing in 1992.
