A foundational player for the competition, Cecil Sandford featured in Geelong's inaugural VFL lineup in 1897 before becoming a senior figure during a bleak era for St Kilda. After two seasons at Corio Bay and a year out of the league, he joined the Saints in 1900, where his versatility as a follower and defender provided much-needed structure to a team that frequently struggled for competitiveness. Sandford's standing among his peers saw him appointed St Kilda captain for the 1901 season, although the side failed to record a victory during his tenure as skipper, and he eventually concluded his 50-game career at the Junction Oval in 1904.
