Bio
A local product promoted from the Richmond Juniors, Charles Smith was a wingman and half-back flanker who served a long apprenticeship in the reserves without ever quite cementing a spot in the senior lineup. While he was a staple of the seconds—accumulating over 60 games for the reserves between 1919 and 1924—his senior opportunities were limited to just three appearances across the 1921 and 1922 seasons. Unable to break into the Tigers' best 22 permanently, he eventually crossed to Williamstown in the VFA before heading to the country, where he tasted premiership success with South Ballarat. Away from the game, the Victorian Railways employee was arguably more renowned for his cue sports ability than his football, developing a reputation as a champion snooker player who famously played off for the state title in 1926.
