Hailing from Berrigan in the Riverina and educated at Caulfield Grammar, Charlie Abbott was a standout centreman who arrived at Hawthorn via University Blues in the VAFA. After starring in the Blues' 1960 Amateur premiership, he broke into the Senior lineup during the club's successful early-1960s period under John Kennedy Sr. A capable midfielder with strong distribution skills, Abbott battled to command a permanent spot in a powerful engine room that included some of the game's greats. His VFL career concluded with a hard-luck story in 1963; after holding his place for the Second Semi-Final, he was omitted from the side for the Preliminary Final and missed out on the Grand Final team in favour of Ron Nalder. Abbott retired prior to the 1964 season to focus on his legal studies, eventually becoming a highly significant administrator and player in the Australian polo community.
