Bio
Born Charles Harding, this Tasmanian recruit arrived at Melbourne via Latrobe and North Launceston, initially cutting his teeth in the reserves. After graduating from the seconds to fill a lineup vacancy midway through the 1927 season, Barnes established himself not as the wingman he was recruited as, but as a reliable defender. He became a consistent presence in the Red and Blue backline, particularly during the 1928 season where he missed only the opening round, playing a disciplined role that resulted in zero career goals. After three seasons of service in the VFL, he departed the club to continue his career in the VFA with Brighton and later Oakleigh.
