Stats
Bio
Recruited from the St Kilda Reserves after showing promise with Aspendale, Charlie Bartling was a rangy utility who broke into the VFL with North Melbourne in the mid-1930s. Standing 183cm, he possessed the height of a key position player but a lighter frame that allowed for mobility, primarily utilized in defensive roles where his lack of goal-kicking output was less of a liability. After struggling to cement a permanent spot in the Shinboners' lineup over two seasons, he crossed to Fitzroy in 1937 seeking greater opportunity, adding two final games to his tally before his league career concluded. While his time at the top level was brief, Bartling’s legacy extends beyond the field as one of the many league footballers who later served his country, deploying to New Guinea with the Australian Army during the Second World War.
