Bio
Recruited from Preston Juniors, Charlie Byrne was a forward who made a brief appearance for Fitzroy during the tumultuous World War I era. He debuted in Round 11 of the unique 1916 season—where Fitzroy finished last on the ladder yet claimed the premiership due to the shortened four-team competition—and managed to boot a goal in his first outing against Richmond. Although he did not feature in the club's historic Grand Final victory that year, Byrne added one more senior game to his tally in 1917 before his career concluded. He was the older brother of Bill Byrne, who would go on to become a fixture at the club, but Charlie's own life was tragically cut short when he passed away in 1924 at the age of just 29.
