Bio
Arriving at Windy Hill with a strong reputation from the VFA, Charlie Challenger was a short and stout utility who had previously tasted premiership success with Brunswick. He crossed to Essendon for the 1940 season and made two senior appearances on a half-forward flank, but his time in the VFL was fleeting. Challenger was cleared back to Brunswick midway through the year, shortly before his football career was put on hold by World War II. He served in New Guinea with the 15th Infantry Brigade—alongside Essendon teammate Les Begley—and eventually returned to the VFA to complete his playing days in the post-war era.
