Recruited from local side Chilwell, Charlie Coles was a foundation player for Geelong who featured prominently during the VFL's inaugural 1897 season. Operating primarily as a follower, he was regarded as a skilled ball-winner with a polished kick, a trait that allowed him to drift forward and become a dangerous scoring threat. This dual capability saw him top the club's goalkicking table in 1901, cementing his value to the Pivotonians during the league's formative years. A consistent performer who played over 70 games, Coles' career was brought to a premature and unfortunate end in 1904 after he suffered a severe broken leg that forced him into retirement.
