Bio
Recruited from local side South Park after catching the eye in a pre-season trial, Charlie Colgan wasted little time establishing himself as a potent avenue to goal for South Melbourne in the VFL's formative years. A dangerous forward who knew where the big sticks were, Colgan topped the club's goalkicking list in consecutive seasons—1898 and 1899—and was rated highly enough to be named in a "team of the year" selection by The Argus. Despite his early dominance inside 50 and a prolific strike rate, his career at the elite level was surprisingly brief; he transferred to the South Melbourne Juniors in the VJFA midway through 1901, spending the next five seasons playing in the lower grades rather than extending his VFL tenure.
