Charlie Dibbs

A foundational pillar of Jock McHale's legendary "Machine" teams, Charlie Dibbs established himself as one of the premier full-backs of the inter-war era. Recruited from the local Collingwood Juniors, he became the anchor of a defensive unit that underpinned the club's record-breaking four consecutive premierships between 1927 and 1930. Renowned for his booming drop kicks and strong overhead marking, Dibbs played with a scrupulously fair yet imposing physical presence that rarely conceded an inch to opposing full-forwards, allowing him to hold down the key defensive post for over a decade.

Despite his dominance in the backline, Dibbs holds a unique place in statistical history for his extreme goal-scoring drought; he played a then-league record 216 matches before registering his first and only career goal during the 1935 season. That year culminated in his fifth premiership with the Magpies, cementing his status as a club great. Following that triumph, he departed Victoria Park to take up the position of captain-coach at Geelong in 1936, bringing invaluable leadership and experience to the Pivot for one final season before his retirement.
