Bio
Recruited from the strong Ballarat football scene, Charlie Doherty was a geographically interesting arrival for Fitzroy having been born in the small East Gippsland town of Lucknow. He was handed his VFL debut in the opening round of the 1898 season, but a heavy 53-point thrashing at the hands of Essendon saw him immediately omitted from the side. Standing 178cm, a solid height for the era, Doherty earned a brief recall three weeks later for a comfortable victory over St Kilda, yet he struggled to cement a permanent role in a lineup that was rapidly evolving into a premiership force. His senior career concluded after just those two appearances, leaving him as a minor footnote in the squad during the Maroons' historic maiden flag-winning campaign.
