Stats
Bio
Recruited from the local Footscray District, Charlie Evans was a tenacious back pocket who established himself as a premier defender during the club's successful early 1960s era. Far from being just a negative stopper, he was a stylish ball-winner who could launch counter-attacks from the last line of defence, a quality that saw him finish equal fifth in the 1961 Brownlow Medal—an exceptional feat for a back pocket. He played a pivotal role in Footscray's run to the 1961 Grand Final against Hawthorn and his form was strong enough to earn selection for Victoria the following year. After four seasons at the Western Oval, Evans crossed to South Melbourne in 1964 for one final eight-game stint before closing the book on his VFL career.
